Kenkey or kormi or kokoe or dorkunu is a staple dish similar to sourdough dumpling from the Ga-inhabited regions of West Africa, usually served with pepper sauce and fried fish or soup, stew. kenkey is mostly eaten in Accra.
Per our research, the price of kenkey has gone up in some parts of lapaz which is really shocking. Normally, the highest price you buy a ball of kenkey is Ghs 1.50p but to my surprise, i bought a ball of kenkey for Ghs 2.00. I didn’t really understand the increment hence i decided to find out from the seller.
Speaking to the kenkey seller, she made me understand that, her source of maize for producing her kenkey has changed. Normally, she uses the local maize but then she discovered that, the local maize doesn’t produce a fine finished kenkey since the maize has over stayed with her supplier. This really slowed her business for a month. Even though it was cheaper, it drove away my costumers because they keep complaining about the texture of the kenkey. They said its really hard.. She said.
The kenkey seller revealed to me that, she currently buys her maize all the way from Burkina Faso. Even though its costly, its the best she has been working with for sometime now and due to her expenditure, she decided to increase her kenkey from Ghs 1.00 to Ghs 1.50p and from 1.50p to Ghs 2.00 meaning, you cant buy kenkey at Ghs 1.00 from her stand.
She also disclosed to me that, most of the top kenkey sellers in lapaz has increased their kenkey and selling at the same price she does.
Weather they will reduce the price when the local maize is back is unknown.
